How to get in shape as a complete beginner
Getting in shape starts with showing up, not with the perfect program. Short workouts you actually do beat long ones you skip. Start easier than you think you should and build from there.
Start this week
Your first 3 steps
- 1
Do a 10-minute walk today, outside if you can
10 min · Done when: You walked for 10 minutes
Walking is the easiest habit to start and it builds the routine before you add harder workouts.
- 2
Try 3 rounds of 10 squats, 5 push-ups (knees are fine) and a 20-second plank
15 min · Done when: You finished the 3 rounds
This simple bodyweight circuit works your whole body and needs no equipment.
- 3
Put 3 workout times for this week in your calendar
5 min · Done when: 3 workouts are scheduled
A workout with a time on it is much more likely to happen than one you'll do "sometime."

Your first 4 weeks
Week 1
Walk 10 minutes a day and do the bodyweight circuit twice.
Week 2
Do the circuit 3 times. Add one push-up or a few seconds to your plank each time.
Week 3
Add a 20-minute walk or jog on two days. Keep the circuit going.
Week 4
Look back: what felt easier? Raise one thing (reps, rounds or time) and keep the 3-day schedule.
Mistakes that stop most people
- Going all-out on day one and being too sore to continue.
- Following a program built for someone far more advanced.
- Skipping sleep. Your body gets stronger while you rest.

Common questions
How long until I see results?
Many people feel better within two weeks (more energy, better sleep). Visible changes usually take a few months of consistent work.
Do I need a gym?
No. Bodyweight exercises and walking or running are plenty to get in shape as a beginner.
Is it okay to be sore?
Mild soreness for a day or two is normal when starting. Sharp pain isn't. If something hurts, stop and check with a doctor.
